Integrated Circuit Signal Delay

چکیده

Technologies for designing and building microelectronics-based computational equipment have been steadily advancing ever since the first commercial discrete circuits (ICs) were introduced in the late 1950s (1) (monolithic integrated circuits were introduced in the 1960s). As predicted by Moore's law in the 1960s (2), integrated-circuit density has been doubling approximately every 18 months, and this doubling in size has been accompanied by a similar exponential increase in circuit speed (or more precisely, clock frequency). These trends of steadily increasing circuit size and clock frequency are illustrated in Figs. 1(a) and 1(b), respectively. As a result of this amazing revolution in semiconductor technology, it is not unusual for modern integrated circuits to contain over 10 million switching elements (i.e., transistors) packed into a chip area as large as 500 mm 2 (3–5). This truly exceptional technologi

A MEMS Capacitive Microphone Modelling for Integrated Circuits

In this paper, a model for MEMS capacitive microphone is presented for integrated circuits.  The microphone has a diaphragm thickness of 1 μm, 0.5 × 0.5 mm2 dimension, and an air gap of 1.0 μm. Using the analytical and simulation results, the important features of MEMS capacitive microphone such as pull-in voltage and sensitivity are obtained 3.8v and 6.916 mV/Pa, respectively while there is no...

Analysis of DLL Jitter Due to Substrate Noise

Substrate noise is the major source of performance limitation in mixed-signal integrated circuits. This paper studies substrate noise effects on the performance of delay-locked loops (DLLs). Due to their robust noise performance, the delay-lockedloops are widely used as clock generators of microprocessors. Although exploiting advanced circuit techniques reduces the timing jitter induced by the ...

Delay and Power Expressions Characterizing a CMOS Inverter Driving an Load

On-chip parasitic inductance has become an important design issue in high speed integrated circuits. On-chip inductance may degrade on-chip signal quality, affect transmission delay, and cause additional short-circuit power dissipation. The effects of onchip inductance on the output voltage, propagation delay, and shortcircuit power of a CMOS inverter are presented in this paper. Analytic equat...

A digitally programmable delay element: design and analysis

Variable delay elements are often used to manipulate the rising or falling edges of the clock or any other signal in integrated circuits (ICs). Delay elements are also used in delay locked loops (DLLs). Although, a few types of digitally controlled delay elements have been proposed, an analytical expression for the delay of these circuits has not been reported. In this paper, we propose a new d...

Multi-level Digital/mixed-signal Simulation with Automatic Circuit Partition and Dynamic Delay Calculation

A unified and consistent representation of logic gates at logic and circuit levels is described based on the subcircuit expansion approach. A dynamic-delay model is proposed for gate-level timing simulation, which includes the effects of nonlinear capacitive loading, input transition time, and multiple-input triggering on the delay. It is shown that the approach provides near circuit-level accu...
